REVIEW AND FREE DOWNLOAD - CHANTER'S ALLEY "Broken" EP (2012)

Chanter's Alley - Broken
Release date: February 5th, 2012
Running time: 15:48, 5 tracks

After my Summer holidays I was surfing the net in search of new bands and I came across Chanter’s Alley, a kick-ass streepunk band  from Seoul (South Korea). The band released a 5 track EP in February 2012 that was recorded by a North American/South Korean  line-up: John Middlemis (vocals, guitar), Joongmo (guitar), Bryan Suechting (bass, vocals), Doowan (drums) and Trevor Gardner (bagpipes, vocals). Currently the band is working on their debut album and the personnel are John Middlemis (lead vocals/guitar), David Seiden (guitar), Bryan Suechting (bass/vocals), Ray Paez (drums) and Trevor Gardner (bagpipes/harmonica/vocals).

If you have watched the "Olde Jamestown Hall" video that was posted here last September 24th, then you’ll know that these guys have issued one of the best EPs of 2012. Their approach is not new, they are following the path that was opened by the Dropkick Murphys original line-up. However, it’s obvious that Chanter’s Alley music is as good as any Street Dogs or Rancid gig: attitude, passion, catchy songs, excellent sing-along choruses and turbo engine sound.

The whole EP is a must have and fortunately, it can be downloaded for free from Reverbnation. The most popular number could be the opening track, an amazing bagpipes punk number that can rival with the best Canadians bands like Tartan Hearts and Farler’s Fury or even the US band The Tradesmen. But, together with the "Olde Jamestown Hall", the catchiest songs would be “Another Beer” and the traditional song “All for Me Grog”. “Another Beer” is a true gem: if you like Rancid or Beantown Boozehounds, you’ll be listening to this song all day long. “All for Me Grog” is the kind of song that normally has got overexposure. Recently Lexington Field recorded a superb rendition and now Chanter’s Alley has taken the lead. The top-notch bagpipes arrangements are the main contribution to this song. Yes, it’s always “All For Me Grog”, but a real cover.

2012 seems to be a great year for bagpipes punk: some months ago The Real McKenzies released “Westwinds”, Black Tartan Clan released the “Standing Strong” EP and  Pipes and Pints will release “Found and Lost” soon.  If you love those bands, you should get Chanter’s AlleyBroken” EP. And, if you are not really a Celtic punk fan, but a streetpunk fan and love Street Dogs, Rancid or Dropkick Murphys,  then you should also check this band out. Remember, "Broken" is one of the best EPs of 2012.

REVIEW - THE SCALLY CAP BRATS "Let Us Drink, For We Must Die" (2012)

The Scally Cap Brats "Let Us Drink, For We Must Die" Take a Shot Records #001
Release date: September 14, 2012
Running time: 27:21, 12 tracks

Otawa’s finest band The Scally Cap Brats have just released their debut album: “Let Us Drink, For We Must Die”. Twelve honest Celtic punk-rock numbers with Oi! influences on an album that it’s said to be a sort of a tribute to their heroes, Dropkick Murphys.

The Scally Cap Brats were one of the best newcomers of 2011. The “Take a Shot” EP was highly appreciated by both fans and critics because of their back to basics sound and their high voltage energy. With a small line-up change (bassist Katherine Maziec left the band and was replaced by Danny DeVille), the guys recorded their debut album between February and March 2012 at Yogi’s Metalocker Studios in Ottawa.

All of the tracks are originals and 4 out of the 5 songs from the “Take a Shot” EP have been re-recorded. Yes, they have been re-recorded and they are shorter now. New arrangements, a better studio and better production have given a new lease of life to kick-ass songs like “The Scally Cap Brats” and “Take a Shot”.  But their classics tracks are not the core of the album.  The CD is really strong and well-balanced:  an amazing DKM sounding intro, a catchy tribute to the Boston influential band (“Let Us Drink, For We Must Die”), a pirate number à la McGillicuddys ("The Pirate’s Life”), an oi! anthem (“Barfly”) ….

The most important thing is that you get exactly what you expect. The lads state that their influences are Dropkick Murphys, The Street Dogs and The Mahones. Then you can be sure that you’ll hear those bands on the SCB songs.  They also say that “Do or Die” was pivotal to their formation. Then lyrics, attitude and line-up will confirm this. No frills. No fiddle, no pipes … just an excellent mandolin by Mike Farney (a.k.a. Mike Eff) and only a new addition (in fact a great addition), the tin whistle played by Mike on some tracks: “Introduction”, “Iron and Steel”.

To finish-up, some leads: “Whiskey, Beer and Cider”, a Mahones influenced chorus on an excellent song, and “Iron & Steel”, a song about the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, acoustic guitar and tin whistle on a song musically influenced by the DKM’s “Blackout” era. Remember that both of them can be downloaded for free!!!

REVIEW - THE MAHONES "Angels & Devils" (2012)

The Mahones "Angels & Devils"
Release Date: November 13, 2012
Running Time: 46:24,  12 tracks + 1 bonus track

After 20 years, five studio albums, two compilations and one live album, The Mahones have finally got the recognition they deserved.  A brilliant album that got rave reviews last year (“The Black Irish”), a tribute album and tours with Dropkick Murphys, Street Dogs or alone have helped to broaden their fan base. Apparently, Finny noticed that they were on a “now or never” situation to break through. Then, I was a little bit concerned when they posted last April at their Facebook site that a new album would be released in 2012. Why? Nowadays  the bands release a new album every two years. Moreover,  too much tours normally involve no songwriting. Would the album meet the fans expectations?

Later, the tracklisting and the  album cover were posted on Facebook. “The Black Irish” artwork was really appealing, but, IMHO, “Angels & Devils” cover  is not quite impressive. But, as you know, don’t judge a CD by its cover. It could be a good sign. Regarding  the tracklist and the guest list, I feel that Finny thought that he have found the right approach: put together the best elements of  “Take No Prisoners” together with those of “The Black Irish”. Theoretically, it should work. But sometimes the final result is quite the contrary. In other words, it may seem simple and effective, but it could be very risky too.

I must admit that I made a big mistake. I  always try not to read what other people have written about the albums that I have to review. But I read the enthusiastic review that was posted at Paddyrock. I was a little bit concerned about the new album and then I read that it was awesome. Normally my worries should have gone. However, my mind went on another direction. Expectations were too high now. This might not be fair for the band. Therefore I have listened to the album carefully and tried to keep away any “previous ideas” that I could have. These are my comments .

First of all, everybody is talking about the special guest list: Ken Casey, Jake Burns, Greg Keelor, Felicity Hamer and The Brains members. As a marketing tool, this is OK. However, I find that the main strength of the album is the tin whistle playing by Dave Gossage (Orealis, Hadrian’s Wall …) and fiddling by  Jonathan Moorman (Bodh’aktan). Jonathan played the fiddle and mandolin on 6 tracks on “Take No Prisoners” and two different flutists played the tin whistle on that album (Micheal O’Grady and Andrew Brown). Then, I can say that the best element of the “Take No Prisoners” album is also present on “Angels & Devils”: the great sound based on the whistler and fiddler’s musicianship.

Jake Burns' performance on “Angels & Devils” is excellent too, but I feel that Ken Casey should have guested on “Past the Pint of No Return” instead of “Spanish Lady

Now, the self-penned songs.  Which will be the songs that could be included in the “Definitive Mahones collection”? Obviously, the opening track “Shakespeare Road”. Mahones at their best: manic whistle, fiddle, shouting, and drumming. Maybe a little bit long for a fast-paced song (more than 5 minutes!!!!). I guess that René de la Muerte (producer)  could have thought it too, but then he remembered those famous words: “Okay, okay, don’t push us when we’re hot”. The other two tracks with the classic Mahones stamp on them would be “The King of Copenhaguen”, another catchy song featuring great whistling by Dave Gossage, and “Past the Pint of No Return”, on which Jonathan Moorman shines once again. I was not very fond of “Angel & Devils”, but the track has grown on me and, as I have said before, Jake Burns guitar work is really amazing. Finally, “The Revolution Starts Now” has a sound close to that of “The Hellfire Club Sessions” era.

The traditional material. The “Spanish Lady” gets the Mahones treatment with a little help by Ken Casey. It’s a good rendition, and a good “trick” to get new fans. But  I feel that Finny and his band mates should stop recording the songs that every single band (Including The Pogues or Shane with The Popes) has covered: “Star of the County Down”, “The Irish Rover”, “Nancy Whiskey”, “The Wild Rover”…. That’s why I have particularly enjoyed their set of tunes. The debut album included a set of polkas, “Mahones Medley”, but no more traditional sets of tunes  can be found on the other albums. Fortunately,  The Mahones have recorded two kick-ass sets of traditional tunes. They are as good as NeckPsycho Ceilidh Mayhem Set”. Given that I’m a little bit bored with the overexposure of the usual standards, I expect that a lot of new bands start to include some sets of jigs and reels on their albums.  The Mahones are a mirror for a lot of bands and I feel that they should be aware of their influence. Hence my wish: less Irish standards and drinking songs and more sets of tunes!

The Mahones have begun to reap what they have sown for the last 22 years. They are masters of the social networks and marketing tools and they have become friends with a lot of excellent musicians. So a lot of attention has been paid to the special guests on their seventh studio album. This should not hide the best assets of the album: the “classic” Mahones anthems,  their shift from the traditional standards to the traditional sets of tunes and the great sound led by the  tin whistle and the fiddle. Maybe Finny should think over adding a whistler and a fiddler on a permanent basis.

P.S.

Final Score: America 1 - Europe 5.

No it’s not the Ryder Cup.
Five European cities are mentioned on the  titles of the Mahones songs (“Drunken Night in DUBLIN”,  “LONDON”, “The AMSTERDAM song”, “Night Train to PARIS” and “The King of COPENHAGUEN”) and only one American city (“Streets of NEW YORK”)

REVIEW - THE STANFIELDS "Death & Taxes" (2012)

The Stanfields "Death and Taxes"
Release date: September 18,2012
Running time: 38:09, 10 tracks

In September 2010 I got an e-mail from Ronan (Celtic Rock Asso France) telling me that I should check out a new band from Nova Scotia, Canada. I really enjoyed what I listened. The Stanfields were not your typical Celtic punk/rock band, but their debut album was a must have. Definitely they were a band to follow.
Two years have gone by and the guys have just released their second album. "Death  & Taxes" is a bigger dose of hard rock guitars together with bluegrass and country influences and awesome folk lyrics. I'm not lying when I say that this album is far better than their debut album. In fact, it's so good that IMHO is one of the top3 albums of the year.

There are excellent rocking numbers like the opening track "Jack of All Trades", the Bryan Adams sounding "Run on the Banks" or the song that shares the title with the album, "Death & Taxes" (imagine a Canadian Street Dogs). However, my faves are those songs with folk roots. The Stanfields rendition of "Mrs. McGrath" is a killer, one of the best songs on the album together with track no. 6, "The Boston States". The music is simply amazing, but the lyrics deal with real "traditional folk" topics. "The Road to Guysborough" is another goods example: a country song about the dangers of walking on the woods at night. Great number à la Steve Earle. "Blacktop Blues" follows the same path, a punkabilly song about the truck drivers' life. And "Fox in the Heather" really rocks.

"Death & Taxes" has been produced by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica, Aerosmith...) Obviously it's a guitars album, since The Stanfields are a rock band. But there is plenty of folk elements on both music and lyrics, as I have previously said. Therefore, if you didn't grab a copy of their debut album, don't make the same mistake again. Go ahead and enjoy one of the most interesting and authentic bands of the current scene.

Tracklist:

01. Jack of All Trades 3:51
02. Run On the Banks 4:25
03. Mrs. McGrath 4:54
04. Invisible Hands 3:22
05. The Road to Guysborough 3:26
06. The Boston States 4:26
07. Fox in the Heather 3:01
08. Blacktop Blues 3:13

FREE DOWNLOADS - THE OLD EDISON

"The Old Edison was the original power plant in the working-class town of South Boston, adapted by Will, Rory, Jima, and Liam, kids who grew up in its shadow; four strong blooded Irish who grew up blue collar grasping at any chance they could get their filthy hands on. Their youth was characterized by hard times where they found solace, friends, and unity in the punk rock scene. All playing their part in different bands throughout the years, soon they found themselves living under the same roof and realizing their common interest in the songs and sounds of yesteryear. They came together with the common goal of bringing honesty and heart back to the forefront. With constant change a part of life, after Jima left the band to pursue schooling, They added both Catherine, a well accomplished fiddle and whistle player with accolades of many twice her age, and Squall, a well established local solo act as well as strong bass player.

The music is stripped down and raw, letting the soul shine true. Influenced by roots, folk, and country music; they tried to combine this sound with the spirit of the music they grew up with. The songs are heartfelt and straight forward, sung of hope, loss, anger, belief, love, insanity, and triumph. Each with the quality of being sung along to with friends. In these times of dishonesty and fear, the band finds their strength in the music and hopes you can to; the only way to make it through is with the help of those around you.

Grab a beer, raise your voice, and enjoy!"

REVIEW - DUBLIN PUBLIC "Irish Music for Singin', Dancin', Drinkin' & Clappin'! " (2012)

Dublin Public "Irish Music for Singin', Dancin', Drinkin' & Clappin'!" Self-released
Release date: June 15, 2012
Running time: 45:29, 12 tracks

Dublin Public hails from Long Beach , California, and consists of Shea Newirk (lead vocals, rythm guitar and tin whistle), Steve Lorentzen (mandolin, banjo and accordion), Nate Morefield (upright bass), Carrie Mock (fiddle) and Jack DeBaun (drums and percussion)

The band started in March 2011 and has already recorded a 12 track album. The title is clear: "Irish Music for Singin', Dancin', Drinkin' & Clappin'! ". Irish drinking songs, ballads and rebel songs influenced by The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, Christy Moore and Great Big Sea.

The sound is more pub audience oriented than Celtic punk and most of the songs are well-known standards. Even if it's a good album for a party or St. Patrick's, I miss some original material. My selection: "Some Say the Devil is Dead", "Follow Me Up to Carlow", "Mari Mac", "All for Me Grog" and "Back Home in Derry".

REVIEW - NEVERMIND NESSIE "EP"

Nevermind Nessie "EP"
Release date: 2012
Running time: 13:31, 4 tracks

Nevermind Nessie is a Belgian band from Lokeren. “Black Tartan Clan wanabees?” Both bands are from the same country and have a name linked to Scotland. Moreover, the design of the Nevermind Nessie EP artwork looks slightly like  the Scottish flag. But that’s all. Nevermind Nessie have no pipes (and they don’t need them) and normally the boys don’t wear kilts on stage.

This five-piece band released a 5 track demo back in 2010 and this 4 track EP has been issued in 2012. A kick-ass EP recorded by a young  band with a fresh sound. Their approach has some similarities with the German band In Search of a Rose early albums.  Let's say that Nevermind Nessie are moving from the Dirty Artichokes end to the Paddy and the Rats and Fiddler’s Green end. The way will not be easy, but they are doing it fine: great fiddling by Irena together with an excellent work by Vincent on melodeon and tin whistle. But Nevermind Nessie are not based  only on the traditional instruments. The band is really tight and Hendrik (guitar),  Reinoud (bass) and Sam (drums) are also adding something to the sound.

The songs? Catchy numbers to sing along. Grab a bottle of Stella Artois, if you have no Trappist beer at hand,  and enjoy numbers like "V.I.P." (amazing song with fiddle and melodeon and fantastic rhythm section) or  "Glasgow Party". The lads have put lyrics to "Tam Lin" and the final result is a gem. A top-notch song that is the right choice to open a gig or to close it. Vincent plays tin whistle on this and the rythm section work is awesome.

Far Away” gets the same treatment: traditional tune, own lyrics and a fight between fiddle and tin whistle. To finish up, “Don’t Die Alone” , more melodeon and fiddle.

No, definitely  Nevermind Nessie are not trying to be another Black Tartan Clan. I guess that they love them as much as they love Dropkick Murphys. But they are following another path: fun, fun, fun. The same path that other European bands such as Firkin or Paddy and the Rats have opened. Congratulations to Nevermind Nessie for delivering the kind of CD that I enjoy: self-penned material and songs based on traditional tunes.

Tracklist:

1 - V.I.P. 3:32
2 - Glasgow Party 3:27
3 - Far Away 3:20
4 - Don't Die Alone 3:06

VIDEO - THE LEVELLERS

Watch the brand new video filmed at Beautiful Days 2012 for Raft of the Medusa from Static On The Airwaves. The song re-tells the true story of the aftermath of the running aground of French Naval frigate, the Méduse. At least 147 people were set adrift on a hurriedly constructed raft; all but 15 died in the 13 days before their rescue.

Raft Of The Medusa is taken from new album Static On The Airwaves - Out now

BAND OF THE MONTH - NEVERMIND NESSIE

New month, new band of the month.

The Band of the Month comes from Flanders (Belgium): Nevermind Nessie. Their 4 track EP will be reviewed in the following days. Stay tuned!!!

"Nevermind Nessie plays fast-paced, danceable folk-punk. Traditional or self-written folk tunes are spiced up with punk and rock elements and transformed into catchy punk songs. With a fiddle, accordion and whistle to drive the tunes, the electric guitar and bass and the drums add the necessary punch to the sound, making it hard to stand still. Whether you're looking for a band to induce foot-tapping to background music, to fill the dance floor, or even to start up some mosh pits... Nevermind Nessie delivers the party you ask for.
Are You ready to party!?"
