VIDEO - SIBIN "First One to Fall"

"First One To Fall" is the second video offering from Sibin. The song is featured on their first studio album - Industrial Life - and is available in all the usual places like itunes.

Footage was shot by Sibin's Charles Hendy and Tim Williams and was filmed over a number of gigs at the Echuca Moama Celtic Festival 2013 and the Mildura New Year's Eve concert at Nowingi Place. The clip was edited by Tim who did an exceptional job and who is also writing this blurb which probably explains the accolades!

A little bit about the band. Sibin (pronounced "shibeen") has been around the blocks a few times - they're a bit like an axe that's had 3 new handles and 2 new heads but the current lineup has been together for the better part of 10 years. They sure aint The Pogues, Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys, but they like nothing more than belting out our own brand of Celtic Punk...or whatever it is they do!

Most of their tunes have an Australian angle to the Irish tradition of bashing out and crashing out a tune about whiskey, deportation, potatoes or love lost/left behind. Their new album - Industrial Life - has a few traditional Irish songs (Salonika, Drunken Sailor, Maids When You're Young) stowing away on a voyage to the colonies. The rest of the album is made up of original tunes - some loose autobiographical accounts about life within a band on the road and some accounts of historic events such as the Eureka Stockade etc.

"Run Johnny Run" is slap-bang in the middle of what they do... some of their stuff is bashier, crashier and a whole lot faster while other songs (like "Away" and "Ode to Ireland") are quieter moments of reflection.

So if you like a bit of tin whistle to wash down your banjo-pluckin while getting smacked in the head with a wall of electric guitar and drums, perhaps you might like their CD.

REVIEW - MALOX "Polka for Punks" (2012)

Malox "Polka for Punks" Audio Montage
Release date: 18 October 2012
Running time: 44:33, 11 tracks

Malox (Eyal Talmudi, sax, clarinet and pipes, and Aviv Bonen, Drums) is an interesting band from Tel Aviv, Israel. In some folk traditions, a duet of bagpiper and snare drums is quite normal, but in “rock” music this kind of line-up is not normal.

Eyal and Aviv play their own music in which klezmer  and Caribbean rythms meet film scores. There is no vocals, but they don’t need them. Their music is intended for dancing  and they create atmospheres. My favourite track is the last one, “Sorvant Horo”. Eyal plays the pipes and the tune has a medieval twist. The title of track no. 3 is quite obvious , “Bagpipe Reggae”. It’s a reggae with some dub elements on which the pipes are played instead of the sax or the clarinet. Maybe that’s a distinctive trademark of the band, to use the instrument that normally should not be played on the style they’re playing. Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel that on  “Polka for Punks”,  a klezmer tune, the sax plays the main role.

I have also enjoyed track no. 5, “Hungarian birds”,  a song on which I can hear echoes from TV cop series and The Clash from the “Combat Rock” era, together with track no. 2, “Americana”, an instrumental  that sounds like the OST from a David Lynch movie. And don’t forget their rendition of the classic “Pop Corn”.

Do you live in Germany? Watch out! These guys are playing at the Jazzhead expo in Bremen next 25th April.

REVIEW - THE BLACK TARTAN CLAN "Don't Walk Alone" (2013)

The Black Tartan Clan "Dont Walk Alone" 4Subculture Records
Release date: February 2013
Running time: 39:18, 13 tracks (12 tracks + 1 bonus track)

The Black Tartan Clan released the best Celtic punk EP of 2012 and that’s a fact. After having listened to “Standing Strong”, I might  think how BTC’s third album would be.  But when the disc is put on the CD player,  I notice that I'm wrong.  “Don’t Walk Alone” is not an enlarged version of “Standing Strong”, but a jaw-dropping album with a new sound.

The guys born in Belgium with a Scottish heart give Dropkick Murphys a run for their money.  Catchy chorus, great banjo and keyboards arrangements and a fine production. The pipes have been recorded and mixed by the book. They sound “in yer face” when necessary and they are not hidden in the mix when other instruments are at the front. McPië and his bandmates has done a fantastic job at their headquarters at Studio Bunker.

The first track is a winner: “Toora Loora” features and amazing banjo, an infectious chorus and excellent pipes.  This is the kind of song that I like. When you think that the song is over, the banjo and the pipes start playing a tune. It’s like Shane MacGowan’s “The Snake with Eyes of Garnet”,  you know what I mean.

Don’t Walk Alone” was already included in the previous EP, then you can go to that review to know what I think about this song.

Next song is “Belgian Tartan Army”. I could say that this is one of the album highlights, but there are a lot of kick-ass songs on the album. Once again the lyrics deal with the band’s experiences, going to Scotland to play some gigs. Obviously there is a DKM tribute, as the chorus goes like this “Sing it Loud Sing it Proud, Together We’re Gonna Make You Shout”. The chorus is sung in such a way that you feel that you’re on the football terraces. By the way, I really love those keyboards arrangements that sound like the piano in the saloon on an old  Western movie.

What about “Chilli Time”? BTC playing a Macc Lads influenced sound, at least lyrically. It’s a well composed mid-tempo song on which pipes and banjo shine again.

The following number is titled “Code of The Clan”. Once again, the song is more Celtic rock than Celtic punk, but quite enjoyable. The lyrics are clear: you don’t need to follow too much rules to become a member of the Clan. Come on, join the Clan!

The BTC love Scotland, so there are no Irish songs on the album. However, The BTC have recorded their own “Loch Lomond” rendition and, to tell you the truth, it can rival with The Real McKenzies cover. A powerful rocking song with the keyboards at their right place. And the next number is another top-notch set of tunes, “The Water is Wide”. Everybody will recognize the first tune as it was recorded by Pipes and Pints on their debut album (“When the Pipers Play”). BTC version is really a well-written song. At the beginning, one can hear the pipes and keyboards at a slower pace and the other instruments join and the tune is played at a faster pace. But this is a set, so there is another tune. This time I would like to draw your attention to the percussion. The second tune sound like a Pipes band to which rocking bass and electric guitar have been added. Hats-off!

Walk Away” is a fast-paced song with a catchy chorus. More banjo and pipes on another gem. After that, “Kilted Boys”, different lyrics with the same message, enjoy BTC’s music and attitude. This time, the tribute goes to Slade’s “Cum On Feel the Noize” via Quite Riot: “Come on Make a Noise/Join the Kilted Boys/Come on Make a Noise/Join the Clan, Join the Kilted Boys

More lyrics about the band’s life can be heard on “5 Minutes”, an amazing Celtic punk number that is followed by “To Battle”. This one is a song about coming back to Scotland to meet the wife after having fought a war. It has some slight DKM influences at the beginning and it’s a great song.

The closing number is a different version of “Finally Free”. A slower rendition with female lead vocals.

Yes, I know that  I have said the closing number. But in fact there is a bonus track: “Kazoo Jig”. You can hear the bar atmosphere: gang vocals, strong guitars, rhythm section and banjo.

OK. That’s all folks. My Grimbergen Dubbel is over and I must go to the fridge to take another one. And that’s what you should do: grab your fave beer and listen to the Clan. Because “Don’t Walk Alone” is a must have. Definitely one of the albums of 2013.

Track list:

1. Toora Loora 3:18
2. Don't Walk Alone 2:59
3. Belgian Tartan Army 2:58
4. Chilli Time 3:16
5. Code Of The Clan 3:43
6. Loch Lomond 3:38
7. The Water Is Wide 3:31
8. Walk Away 2:46
9. Kilted Boys 2:29
10. 5 Minutes 2:46
11. To Battle 2:49
12. Finally Free 3:42
13. Kazoo Jig 1:21

REVIEW - THE JACK RATTS "Sail the deadly Seas"

The Jack Ratts "Sail the Deadly Seas" Crawdaddy CRAW4447
Release date: December 2012
Running time: 49:30, 16 tracks (+ one hidden track)

The Jack Ratts are a new band from Dorset, England. The band consists of Vinnie (guitar, vocals), Andy (mandolin, vocals, banjo, whistle), Fabian (accordion, vocals, banjo), Rich (bass), Jo (fiddle) and Pete (drums, washboard). “Sail the Deadly Seas” is their debut album, an excellent blend of The Pubcrawlers, The Staggerers, The Dreadnoughts and The Punkabillys with Anglo-Irish roots. In other words, pirate songs, shanties, Irish traditional and some Appalachian music.

Sail the deadly Seas” has a well-balanced tracklist, since The Jack Ratts have recorded 9 originals, 7 traditional numbers and one Ewan MacColl cover. The band is really tight on both ends. Even if some of the standards are overexposed, a live show atmosphere can be felt on numbers such as “Leaving of Liverpool” and “Muirsheen Durkin”, a good rendition featuring accordion, tin whistle and great vocals. Track no. 13, “New York Girls/Clumsy Lover Reel” is a true gem: I guess that everybody has always heard “The Clumsy Lover” on bagpipes. The Jack Ratts play a kick-ass banjo version that everyone should check out. The hillbilly numbers “Cripple Creek” and “Big Rock Candy Mountain” are really played with gusto and “Moving On” (you know, the Go!,Move! Shift! song) is a top-notch cover based on banjo, fiddle and mandolin with excellent lead and background vocals. Finally, there is another interesting shanty , the hidden track “Sally Brown”.

I must say that I have enjoyed the covers, but I feel that the self-penned songs are even stronger. The opening track “Sail the Deadly Seas” is a great pirate number, I love particularly the lead vocals. It’s a sort of a Dreadnoughts song at a slightly slower pace. A catchy song. “Cut Throat Jig” is a kick-ass instrumental that can rival with Smokey Bastard. “Working on the Ranch” is another amazing song with an American sound and pirate vocals. Just listen to the excellent guitar work at the end of the song. “The Curse of Jack the Ratt” is an upbeat number where accordion and fiddle shine out.  “The Dark Fable of Davey Jones” is another catchy pirate song with a lara-lara-lara-lah chorus to sing-along. And “The Voyage Beyond the Locker” and “The Tale of no Hope” are in line with the current wave of English folk punk bands.

The English scene has always had awesome bands blending Anglo-Irish music with American Folk music. The Men They Couldn’t Hang, Macavity’s Cat, The Cropdusters and The Boothill Foot-Tappers were at the front of a burgeoning cowpunk/skifle scene at the beginning of the 80’s, and festival bands like Pronghorn have also followed that path. The Jack Ratts have taken some of these elements and have blended them with a pirate/sailor  twist. They have really succeeded and their music can be filed together with that of Captain Bastard and The Scallywags and Smokey Bastard.

Tracklist:

1-Sail The Deadly Seas 3:28
2-Cut Throat Jig 1:44
3-Cripple Creek 2:08
4-Murshin Durkin 1:54
5-Big Rock Candy Mountain 2.19

REVIEW - CALIORNE "Rock Noz Band" (2012)

Caliorne "Rock Noz Band"
Release date: December 1, 2012
Running time: 54:38, 12 tracks

Even if The Chieftains released an album about Bretton music in 1987 and one of the biggest Celtic festivals in the world is held in Lorient (Brittany), the average Celtic fan is not familiar with the bands coming from this area. The likes of Alan Stivell, Dan Ar Braz and  Kornog are well-known, together with newcomers such as Bretton punks Les Ramoneurs de Menhirs and 40 years old folk rock band Tri Yann. But other interesting Celtic rock outfits (Ar Re Yaouank, Wig a Wag …) are not well-known outside of France.

Caliorne is a 6 piece band that could fill this gap, playing the traditional airs of Bretton music (an dro, gavotte, laridé …) with a rock twist. Daniel Bignon (drums, percussions), François Marchal (pipes, digital pipes, clarinet), Hugues Maljean (12 strings electro-acoustic guitar, vocals), Kevin Bijaoui (electric guitar), Olivier Bintein (keyboards, low whistle, bombarde) and Patrick Jamin (bass) have different backgrounds: metal, jazz, blues, funk, rock, celtic... However, they have developed their own sound during the last three years. A sound that they have called Rock Noz Band, Celtic rock with a party/danceable twist.

Basically “Rock Noz Band” is an instrumental album based on original compositions. Only two tracks are sung in French, “Friponne” and “Coulé à pic” and three numbers have some traditional passages (some laridés on “Eridal”, a polka that has been previously recorded by the likes of The Chieftains and The Tossers on “Paul Caliorne” and the beginning of “La Kro, Star de la boîte”.)

The main numbers IMHO would be “Scottish Purple” (excellent guitar work together with pipes and low whistle), “Rolling Dog” (powerful pipes and guitars with an interesting part with keyboards and clarinet), “Reveur” (the shortest bagpipe number on the album), “Ø120/100” (an acoustic start, great pipes and the right dose of keyboards and clarinet) together with the three tracks that have the traditional parts.

So, if you want to get into Bretton folk rock music, Caliorne’s “Rock Noz Band” is a worth hearing album. Perhaps the compositions are a little bit long (around 4-5 minutes), but this is an element that rock fans will appreciate. Let alone the package, a wonderful digipack with all the info you need about  the CD: band members photos, lyrics, liner notes, credits … Do you want to know how many different pipes are played on the album? And who manufactured them? The answers are on the digipack. Grab a bottle of Kronenburg beer or any Bretton cider and enjoy “Rock Noz Band”.

Tracklist:

1-Eridal (Laridé 8 temps) 5:09
2-Trad ha Rock (Gavotte) 4:38
3-Scottish Purple (Scottish) 5:25
4-Impro au Chat (Andro) 4:51
5-Paul Caliorne (Polka) 5:14
6-Ø 120/100 (Rond de Saint Vincent) 5:45
7-Friponne (Plinn ton Simple) 4:08
8-Rêveur (Bal Plinn) 0:52
9-Déjanté (Plinn ton Double) 3:44
10-La Kro, Star de la boîte (Kost ar C'Hoad) 4:03
11-Rolling Dog (Cercle circassien) 6:10
12-Coulé à pic 4:32

VIDEO - THE STUBBY SHILLELAGHS "Top O' The Mornin' Wood"

The Stubby Shillelaghs (Official Video) -  Top O' The Mornin' Wood

Lyrics:

Woke up from a crazy night of beer and revelry
A tent pole down by me waist was all that I could see
I thought of Gran and Thatcher but it did no bloody good
Because I had a horrible case of Top O' The Mornin' wood

Chorus:
Top O' The Mornin' Wood Top O the Mornin' Wood
Can't have breakfast with me family with Top O' The Mornin' Wood

Hunched over like an old man I went quickly down the stairs
Trying to avoid my family's horrible awkward glares
I made it out the front door but I know 'twas understood
That I was suffering from Top O' The Mornin' wood

Chrous:
Top O' The Mornin' Wood Top O the Morning Wood
Walking down the street with me Top O' The Morning Wood

A splash of water did nothing', nor did a bit of ice
When up walked my sweet Marie looking all pretty and nice
She took my hand in hers and she then pulled back her hood
Mildly impressed by my Top O' The Morning Wood

Chorus:
Top O' The Mornin' Wood Top O' The Mornin' Wood
The Stubby Shillelagh that lives in me pants is me Top O' The Mornin' wood

So we go back to her flat, in the old tenement square
And she kindly removed her cloak and laid their naked bare
It may have took two hours but then it no longer stood
Sweet Marie from Killarney fixed me Top O' The Morning Wood

Chorus:
Top O' The Mornin' Wood Top O' The Mornin' Wood
Sweet Marie from Killarney fixed me Top O' The Mornin' Wood
Like a mast from ol' Belfast... She waxed me Top O' The Mornin' Wood

REVIEW - THE WHISKY PRIESTS "Full Circle" EP (2012)

The Whisky Priests "Full Circle" WPTCD23
Release date: 14 December 2012
Running time: 20:26 5 tracks

If there is an olympus for Folk punk, The Whisky Priests will be there together with The Pogues and The Men They Couldn’t Hang. The new generations of Celtic/folk punk fans have grown up with the likes of Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Tossers or The Real McKenzies. Yes, they love The Pogues too. They are legends, aren’t they? Today Celtic/Folk punk has gone global, there are bands all over the world and their fan base increases every day. Everywhere one can go to a Celtic/Folk punk gig, bands are touring regularly and there are several e-zines and radio stations supporting this kind of music.

But there was a time when Celtic/Folk punk was not so popular. And a bunch of bands based in the UK worked really hard to offer something new blending punk and traditional sounds. The Pogues were the first band to do it, but not the only ones. Bands such as The Whisky Priests and Pressgang, among others,  toured Germany, Austria and The Netherlands and together with The Pogues influenced a lot of German and some Dutch bands. This first wave of Celtic/folk punk bands has an impact, at least in Europe. Celtic/Folk punk band didn’t go global, but at least it broke through the mainland.

I’m a Pogues fan. Unfortunately I didn’t see them live before their reunion. However, I was lucky enough to see The Whisky Priests live three times before they broke up. I won’t say that “they changed my life”, but at least they changed a big part of my life. I love The Whisky Priests, their music, their lyrics, their hard work, their commitment, their independency and their fantastic shows.  So I was really happy when I knew that the band was coming back.

A “Best of The Whisky Priests” album is intended for 2013. In the meanwhile, in order to whet appetites, founding member and frontman Gary Miller decided to give a new lease of life to a couple of rarities that have been put together with three tracks that were recorded at an acoustic radio session in Germany.

Full Circle” was the last song that The Whisky Priests recorded. It was released on the various artists compilation album “A Full Head of Steam” in 2.000. It shows the band at its peak. The Miller twins (Gary-guitars and Glenn-accordion) backed by multi-instrumentalist Hugh Bradley, bassist Andy Tong and drummer Cozy Dixon.

Alice in Wonderland” was one of the main songs on the band’s last studio album, their masterpiece “Think Positive”. The version on this EP is a remix that was released on another compilation “Seka (Sister)”. Gary’s motto can be heard on this song: “Think positive! Think confident! Think I am on command!”. Chuck Fleming from the seminal Scottish folk rock outfit The JSD Band and “part-time Priest” made a special guest appearance on fiddle.

The three acoustic tracks are from the same era, and were recorded at Radio 7 in Ravensburg (Germany) on 31 October 1998. The Miller twins performed together with Hugh Bradley (mandolin, penny whistle and backing vocals). The first track from this session is one of the catchiest songs from “Think Positive”: “Car Boot Sale”. The song features the tunes of several old North-East classics: “Billy Boy”, “The Sandgate Lass’s Lament” and the XiX century music hall favourite “Blaydon Races”. A great live rendition with a fantastic whistling by Hugh.

Alice in Wonderland” gets an acoustic treatment by the trio, with great backing vocals.

Finally, a number  from “Life’s Tapestry”, the excellent “Farewell Jobbling”, a tale about an innocent man that was hung.

If you are a Whisky Priests diehard fan, this is an absolute must have for you. And if you have never listened to this essential band, this is a good starting point. Then, go to the band’s bandcamp site and grab all the albums that you can afford. And try to get the jewel cased CDs. Artwork, lyrics, credits and liner notes are a real labour of love.

On top of all these shows, and our crazy schedules, we have been recording our brand new full length record, No Man's War, at Berkley Sound with San Diego's very own Jeff Berkley.  We just wanted to let everyone know that everything is right on schedule for our tentative late May release (more info TBA)!   We will release the cover, done by the amazing Jose Pimienta, the week after St. Patty's and hopefully announcing some more big news on the album by the first week of April.   We finish up official tracking this weekend and then off to mixing and mastering.  We are so excited to share with you our best recorded effort yet.  Stay tuned!

PLAID TO THE BONE - ST.LOUIS ST. PAT'S LINEUP

A quick shout out with Plaid to the Bone St. Louis St. Pat's lineup. Details are in the video.

Quality is not perfect - they just took a quick recording of them jammin' out, but they figure people may still like to rock out to that while viewing their St. Patty's Lineup.

CFPAM CELTIC FOLK PUNK RADIO IS ON AIR!

"CFPAM Celtic Folk Punk Radio is on air! Celtic punk and Celtic rock from the 5 continents. The only global Celtic punk radio"

As you have noticed, I have been running the blog at a slow pace during the last weeks. I have delayed the reviews and the free music because I had to catch up with a new project.

In 2011 and 2012 some bands encouraged me to start a podcast or a radio station. I thought over that for a long time and I drew the conclusion that Grinning Beggar and Paddy O'Punk are already making brilliant podcasts. However, I felt that maybe I could create a different radio. I have some experience, since I have had a show at the German fanzine and Internet station Celtic-Rock. Unfortunately their radio is on a German platform that cannot be heard outside Germany because of copyright matters.

I made a research and basically I found two sites, Live 365 and Radionomy. I decided to open a radio on Radionomy since it's free and it's based in Europe (Belgium). Weeks were passing by and St. Patrick's Day was almost here. I was too busy writing reviews (around 5 reviews/month!!!), so it was obvious that I have to stop the reviews if I wanted to launch the radio before St. Patrick's Day. So, I have been working on the radio station and listening to other stations on Live 365 and Radionomy.

I am aware that the main Celtic rock site have just started his own radio on the same platform. Nevertheless I don't feel that my radio will be a competitor to that superb station. I have always followed my own way: to focus mainly on new bands and support bands from all over the world. All the Celtic rock/punk sites from both sides of the pond have their own identity, even if they have found some common ground. And I have tried to put the CFPAM blogzine stamp on my radio. If you are a Celtic rock/punk fan I guess that you're  following  as much Celtic rock/punk sites as possible. Then, you should also listen to different radios, because you'll find different approaches and you'll discover new bands.

The radio is placed at the top of the blog on the right side, but you can also find it here:
