REVIEW - DARVRA'S WAVE "The Witches Recall" (2013)

Darvra's Wave "The Witches Recall" Self-released
Release date: 4 November 2013
Running time: 42:17, 10 tracks

The Witches Recall” is the brilliant debut album by Irish-Londoners Darvra’s Wave. Peter Heffron (lead vocals and guitars), Josie Simmons (tin whistle, sax, clarinet & recorder), Antonia Pagulatos (fiddle) and Joshua Law (drums) together with guest musicians Justin McConville (backing vocals and electric guitar), James Gavin (fiddle and bodhrán), Sean Parsons (banjo) and Matthew Nervin (box) have recorded this 10 track CD that has been produced and arranged by Peter and Josie. I’m sure that fans who enjoy Celtic folk music with a pop/rock twist will love this album.

To put it in a nutshell, Dardra’s Wave have put together the best elements of bands such as 4 Men and a Dog, Capercaillie, Goats Don’t Shave, The Waterboys or Goats Don’t Shave. The final result is a true gem. The tracks that stand out: “Joy to You” (amazing Celtic pop with a Beatles twist), “Think Twice” (a song with O’Carolan flavour and lyrics about the Troubles in Belfast), “Anthony” (sounds from the other side of the pond), “The Witches Recall” (based on the “Johnny Jump Up” tune) and “Back of Beyond” (great intro with the wolf, the waves and the bell on this instrumental number ).

However, above all, you should check out the kick-ass set of tunes: “Don’t Kit the Kat” (Lúnasa goes Celtic rock) and “Sack of Spuds” (a track to file together with pub sessions albums like “Music at Matt Molloy’s”)

Darvra’s Wave were our Band of October 2013. This was only a small milestone on their career, since their music will be soon appreciated by bigger folk and rock audiences.

Tracklist:

01 - Joy to You 3:56
02 - Don't Kick the Kat 3:33
03 - Think Twice 4:48
04 - Sack of Spuds / Grogans 3:46
05 - Anthony 4:54
06 - Song for Dave 4:30
07 - The Cat Song 4:49
08 - The Witches Recall 3:34
09 - Back O'beyond 3:19
10 - Think Twice (Bonus Track) 4:48

REVIEW - LOCHNESZ "Dance the Jawbreaker Jig" (2013) AND FREE DOWNLOAD

LochNesz "Dance the Jawbreaker Jig"
Release date: 23 November 2013
Running time: 37:08, 10 tracks + 1 bonus track

Hungary has a burgeoning Celtic punk scene. Paddy and the Rats and Firkin, are its biggest ambassadors, but younger bands are following in their footsteps. Lochnesz, the sextet from Budapest, released an interesting EP last year showcasing the songwriting of different members. A new drummer and a new guitarist have joined the crew and they have just released a kick-ass album. The lads know that Paddy and The Rats and Firkin have a strong identity, great singers, brilliant musicians and a strong stage presence. Therefore, they have worked really hard to find their own place and one can say that the effort has paid off.

The songs have been written by different members (accordionist Marcell, piper István, fiddler Gergely and former guitarist Péter) but the final result is a well-balanced album. The three songs from their previous EP (two pirate numbers and a “complaint” about the missus) have been re-arranged and re-recorded. Apart from those, there is a song from The Dubliners repertoire, “Down by the Glenside” (yes, a band doesn’t need to cover the same old standards),  Dave King’s vocal influences on “Jawbreaker Jig”, more pirates lyrics like “Have Another Whisky” and its Hungarian version “Johet met egy whisky”, songs based on traditional tunes such as “Howling Wind (Tam Lin)” and “Have Another Whisky” or on Robbie Burns lyrics like “The Gud Ale",  and a Bastards on Parade sounding song “Never Say Goodbye.

The band is really tight, with a top-notch rythm section, excellent piping, amazing fiddling and fantastic guitar work. Check out the following tracks: “The Gud Ale” (drums, pipes and fiddle), “Down by the Glenside” (fiddle, drums and, above all, electric guitar), “Have Another Whisky” (drums, pipes, accordion and fiddle), “Never Say Goodbye" (vocals, pipes and electric guitar), “Why is the Rum Gone” (bass, drums, accordion and fiddle) and “Monster” (banjo, fiddle)

LochNesz have done a fantastic job. This album was a challenge and they have succeded in catching the fans attention. Don’t make comparisons with Hungarian Celtic punk heavyweights; just listen to LochNesz songs and have fun. Besides, their music can be downloaded for free!

Traclist:

01 - O Gude Ale 3:11
02 - Jawbreaker Jig 2:58
03 - Down by the Glenside 3:29
04 - Have Another whisky 3:01
05 - The Howling Wind 3:53
06 - Dust from the Road 3:51
07 - Why is the Rum Gone? 3:40
08 - Monster 3:16
09 - My Sweet Betty 2:59
10 - Never Say Goodbye 3:20
11 - Johet met egy whisky (Bonus track) 3:02

REVIEW - CALICO JACK "Panic in the Harbour" (2013) AND FREE DOWNLOAD

Calico Jack "Panic in the Harbour" (2013) Self-released
Release date: October 5th, 2013
Running time: 24:26, 4 tracks

Calico Jack was a pirate captain operating in the Caribbean Sea during the early 18th century. Nowadays, Calico Jack is a band from Milan (Italy) playing folk metal. The band ‘s line-up is Giò (lead vocals), Melo (lead guitar), Toto (rhythm guitar), Ricky (bass), Dave (fiddle) and Caps (drums). Apparently they try to merge metal from the 80’s and the current Scandinavian metal. I’m not a metal diehard fan, but I guess that they would be closer to Skyclad (the line-up is similar) or Alestorm (Scottish pirate metal) than to the viking and pagan metal bands.

I have particularly enjoyed the two drinking songs on the EP, the opening track “Where Hath th’Rum Gone” and “Grog Jolly Grog”, since the fiddle plays a more important role than on the other two songs. “House of Jewelry”, a song about the places pirates visit when they are at harbours, would be more classic metal and the closing track “Deadly Day in Bounty Bay” is a little bit long, but I have enjoyed the part that runs from the beginning to minute 2:40. It’s a kick-ass intro part featuring fiddle and guitar with a British folk rock twist.

The EP is available for free at the band’s site, but hard copies are available for 5 Euros + shipping costs.

Tracklist:

01 - Where Hath th' Rum Gone? 4:17
02 - House of Jewelry 6:13
03 - Grog Jolly Grog 5:19
04 - Deadly Day in Bounty Bay 8:34

THE MAHONES FUNDRAISER

Having just announced the launch of their own record label this past Friday, The Mahones have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the recording costs of their forthcoming album, The Hunger & The Fight. The fundraiser is online at www.themahones.co, and a note from the band is below:

The Mahones are heading back into the studio in 2014 to record our forthcoming double album, The Hunger & The Fight. We'll be putting this album out on our very own label, Whiskey Devil Records, because we know that doing things ourselves (DIY) is the best way to get as much music as we can to our friends and fans.

You, our beloved fans, have proven time and again that you're the very best, and we're asking for your help and support with this new project. In order to cover the huge costs of recording a double album, we're holding a fundraiser in exchange for some awesome thank you gifts and rare opportunities. THE FUNDRAISER PAGE WILL BE UP WITHIN THE HOUR! Please have a look, buy/donate what you can (in exchange for something fun!), and help us make Irish punk history!

Thanks, and all our love,
The Mahones

EAST GRAND (USA) SIGNS THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY

East Grand will be releasing THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY'S upcoming full-length (CD/LP/digital) "Letters From The Road Less Travelled" in early 2014!

Melbourne Celt folk-punks THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY broke onto their local scene in 2010 and quickly set about playing to diverse crowds up and down the East Coast of Australia, finding themselves equally at home in front of a festival crowd as the dark seedy punk rock shows that they knew and loved. Setting out to create party music they combined Aussie folklore with personal experience, while drawing inspiration from the sounds of Australian and Celtic folk, with a heavy dose of the punk rock which they had grown up on.

THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY extend their international reach by joining the East Grand family for the release of "Letters From the Road Less Travelled". Joining the likes of CONTINENTAL (ex Dropkick Murphys guitarist Rick Barton), Celtic punks THE TOSSPINTS, and punk rockers THE HEX BOMBS, the band are excited to push back into the US and reach the audiences which offered this little band from Melbourne such amazing support the last time they were in the US, when they toured the East Coast with DROPKICK MURPHYS.

The future for these Aussies, still relatively early in their career, certainly has more questions than answers but the ride is sure to be a long and wild one.

REVIEW - PADDY'S FUNERAL "Celtic Voodoo" (2013)

Paddy's Funeral "Celtic Voodoo" Self released
Release date: 16 March 2013
Running time: 27:52, 8 tracks

The German band Paddy’s Funeral has had various ups and downs, but finally they have been able to release their second album, “Celtic Voodoo”. The current line-up is Jan (lead vocals, electric guitar, bouzouki, mandolin and tin whistle), Grischa (electric  and acoustic guitars and mandolin) and Levent (drums and percussion). As the band has no permanent bassist, their mate Sebastian plays bass on the album.

The eight tracks on the album can be divided into three groups: Celtic covers, original Celtic rock songs and hard-rock/metal influenced songs.

The three standards run from track 2 to track 4. “Black is the Colour” is a well-known song on Christy Moore’s repertoire. Paddy’s Funeral have rearranged the song with different parts, quieter moments with flute or mandolin and more rocking moments with electric guitar.  “Join the British Army” is  an upbeat cover, a real catchy number. “Polka” is the usual set of polkas “Dennis Murphy’s/John Ryan’s”. IMHO, it's one of the album highlights. The lads have forgotten about the traditional music instruments and have focused on electric guitar. The final result is amazing.

Jan has written the lyrics to the next songs, “No Regrets” and “Quit My Job”. Both numbers have the band’s own Celtic stamp on them: folked up punk’n’roll. Jan plays tin whistle and guest  Dr. Wolf plays fiddle on “No Regrets”.

Finally, there are two numbers that can be put together with the opening track “Sleaze” (do you really need some info about this song?): Danzig’s “Mother” and “Celtic Voodoo Lady”, a Swedish retro-rock infused song following the liner notes.

My Faves?  “Polka”, “Quit My Job” and “Black is the Colour”.

It’s not easy to file Paddy’s Funeral under a label. Anyway, the guys from Göttingen have been able to keep faithful to their own ideas. If you are looking for a  DKM or Flogging Molly sound, this is not your band. But if you are an open minded (Celtic) rock fan, you should check out these guys and you’ll enjoy some of their songs.

Tracklist:

1 - Sleaze 2:59
2 - Black is the Colour 3:46
3 - Join the British Army 2:14
4 - Polka 3:32
5 - No Regrets 4:40
6 - Quit My Job 2:20
7 - Mother 4:18
8 - Celtic Voodoo Lady 4:00

VIDEO - FINNEGAN'S HELL "Drunken Christmas"

"Drunken Christmas" is a single from Finnegan's Hell's forthcoming album, which is yet untitled. The new album will be released in 2014, as soon as Finnegan's Hell finds a new record label. The band recently decided to leave Hell On Wheels Records.

Lyrics:

Christmas is here
and I'm drunk again
Should I open my present
or go back to bed?
Every year's just the same
so why even care?
I've got a feeling
that we've been misled

One drink for Santa Claus
One drink for me
One drink to get us through
this white misery
(repeat refrain)

Christmas is here
and he's drunk again
Should I open my present
or go back to bed?
Every year's just the same
so why even care?
I've got a feeling
that Santa is dead

The Irish Folk Punk Party has established itself as a cultural highlight that you don’t want to miss out on. There is a reason that the small town that has the honor of calling itself home to this event is also known as “Little Dublin” amongst Irish Folk Punkers. As this “Live Act Party” has the mission to import the Irish way of life all the way to Germany, it creates a symbiosis between tradition and modernity just like the Irish Folk Punk does. What’s better than partying relentlessly with two fantastic live acts and a show that is so much more than a concert?! It is the party of the year. It is time for the Irish Folk Punk Party 3!

THE BANDS

Paddy and the Rats (Hungary)

There is a reason that these guys can call themselves “Hungary’s most famous Irish Folk Punk Band”! The last five years they have been rocking hundreds of concerts and almost every important festival in Europe. Their legendary shows will leave your throats thirsty for more singing, your legs for dancing and your hands for clapping. We’re proud to announce that they gladly accepted our invitation to the Irish Folk Punk Party 3. It’s gonna be Pub’n’Roll when Paddy and the Rats enter the planks of our stage in Gevelsberg, Germany.

The O’Reilly and the Paddyhats (Germany)

They have only been in the business for two years but there is definitely no need to hide from the big fishes in the ocean of Irish music. Due to their fantastic and distinctive sound they have conquered the hearts of many Irish Folk Punk Fans within the speed of light. They are straight on their way into the “Irish Folk Punk Hall of Fame”! No matter whether they rock the stages of festivals, Irish Pubs or concert halls in Moscow and Madrid: wherever they deliver their show, their fans just forget their nationality for one night and join the party as united dancing and clapping “Irish Folk Punkers”!

THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY EUROPEAN DISTRIBUTION FOR FORTHCOMING ALBUM

Melbourne Celt punks The Ramshackle Army are proud to announce that they have secured a deal with Swedish label Heptown Records for the full European distribution of their debut full length album “Letters From The Road Less Travelled”, to be released early 2014.

Heptown Records was established in 2002 in Lund, Sweden, and over the past 11 years have grown into one of Scandinavia’s leading underground labels. With a catalogue spanning Punk, Ska, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Swing, Surf and Garage the label has become most known to the Celt punk scene for its release of Swedish Celt punk powerhouse Sir Reg’s albums “Sign of the Times” and “21st Century Loser”.

Recently, Heptown Records added to its stable with distribution of American Fiddle Rockers Lexington Field, and now with the addition of Aussies The RSA, the label is spreading its name worldwide. “We are excited to join mates, and bands we’re fans of, Sir Reg and Lexington Field as part of the Heptown team” said lead singer Gaz Byrne. “We hope this will help grow our fanbase so we can one day soon head over and share the stage with some of the AMAZING Celt punk acts
coming out of Europe”.

The band themselves have been tied to the studio over the last 2 months, namely Head Gap Studios in Preston (VIC), with Loki Lockwood (who’s production credits include Brothers Grim & the Blue Murders and Graveyard Train). Since the recording of their debut EP “Life Lessons and Drunken Sessions” in 2011, the band has assembled an extensive list of tracks, a cross section of which have made it to the album. For The Ramshackle Army, a band who began some 3 years ago, this is the first such significant move into the European market. The band is excited to begin their push beyond Australian waters and into this corner of the world where the Celt punk community has been providing support since the band’s inception.

The album will be distributed though out Europe both in retail stores, though the label’s distribution channels (Cargo, Sound Pollution, Sonic Rendezvous & VME), and online from the Hepcat Sweden Website (http://www.hepcat.se). The Ramshackle Army have finished tracking, and are putting the final touches on Letters From The Road Less Travelled. In the meantime the new single “Anchors Aweigh” and bside “Boys From The County Hell” (Pogues Cover) are available online from iTunes and The Ramshackle Army BandCamp (http://theramshacklearmy.bandcamp.com/).

Stayed tuned for further release and tour details!

REVIEW - STÖJ SNAK "Fuck"

Stöj Snak "Fuck EP" 5FeetUnder Records
Release date: 27 August 2013
Running time: 7:37, 3 tracks

In 1991 Billy Bragg released an album titled “Don’t Try This at Home”. The first single from the album was “Sexuality". Do you remember the chorus? “Sexuality - Strong and warm and wild and free/ Sexuality - Your laws do not apply to me/Sexuality - Come eat and drink and sleep with me/Sexuality - We can be what we want to be

The Danish songwriter known as Stöj Snak almost threw out his song “Fuck” a catchy song featuring banjo and egg shakers, since he felt that the lyrics were “outdated and redundant. Nevertheless, recent events like Russian official position against homosexuality pushed him to change his mind.

The other numbers on the EP are “Crooked and Criminals”, an interesting song with a different instrumentation (keyboards, melodica and percussion) and “How”, a back to basics song (guitar, drums and harmonica) with a great chorus: “What do they got? They’ve got no right/They are here for us and not the other way around/And we all own the future

REVIEW - THE STUBBY SHILLELAGHS " Celtic American" (2013)

The Stubby Shillelaghs "Celtic-American"
Release date: October 29, 2013
Running time: 45:56, 16 tracks

The Stubby Shillelaghs are back with their most ambitious work to date, the 16 track album “Celtic American”. Blending Irish and Scottish influences with American culture, the lads have found their own place among the balladeers. Apart from original members Ryan, Shaughnessy and Andy, there is a new fiddler (Eric Fisher) and a girl (Megan T) has guested on vocals on several tracks: “Caledonia”, “Gotham's Finest” and a "Question of Heaven”. As The Stubby Shillilaghs are aware that they're mainly a live act, they have tried to create that live atmosphere on the album by adding some jokes/spoken tracks/commercials such as “Who Told You Could Talk”, “Civil War Bros” or “Give Me Back My Family

My choices: “The Cash-Up”, a number blending  Johnny Cash (“Folsom Prison Blues”) and Dominic Behan (“The Auld Triangle”), the fine tune “The Stubby Shillelagh”,  Dougie Maclean’s song “Caledonia”, the Appalachian number “Corn Shuckin’ Time”, “The Blue Bollocks Blues” (obviously a Blues) and, above all, the closing number, the metal infused “A Question of Heaven” featuring female background vocals by Megan T and Kirsten Carpenter and kick-ass percussion.

Tracklist:

01. Celtic-American (feat. Marc Gunn) 2:50
02. The Cash-Up: Folsom Prison Blues / The Auld Triangle 3:10
03. Who Told You You Could Talk [Explicit] 0:31
04. The Stubby Shillelagh 1:33
05. Caledonia (feat. Megan T) 3:30
06. Perfect World [Explicit] 3:03
07. Drink You Pretty [Explicit] 2:41
08. Civil War Bros [Explicit] 1:40
09. Bound for Virginia 2:29
10. Corn Shuckin' Time 2:04
11. Mountain Rain 2:44
12. Blue Bollock Blues 3:17
13. Give Me Back My Family [Explicit] 1:46
14. Gotham's Finest (feat. Megan T) [Explicit] 4:30
15. A Toast to Phil (Earth's Mightiest Heroes) [Explicit] 3:37
16. A Question of Heaven (feat. Megan T & Kirsten Carpenter) 6:31

REVIEW - BRICK TOP BLAGGERS "Two Years Enough" (2013)

Brick Top Blaggers "Two Years Enough" Blagthis
Release date: September 15, 2013
Running time: 50:17, 13 tracks

Sooner or later,   musicians confront a dilemma: to keep faithful to their first album sound or to move forward. Brick Top Blaggers have not waited to the “difficult third album” and have taken their decision before releasing their second album. They issued a fantastic 3 EP some months ago and their answer was clear: new instruments, new sounds and a lot of respect to tradition. “Two Years Enough” is the logical follow-up to that EP.

It’s true that the line-up of the band has changed, but most of the tracks have been written by Steve Almond (vocals) and Matt Maulding (accordion). And even if Greg Mintz is not a full-part member of the band now, he has written  “Two Years Enough” and “Love by Attrition” and co-written “Plastic Paddy” and “Witness to My Own Wake” together with Steve and Matt. Moreover, he has played guitar on 7 tracks. New members Nolan Lynch (5 string banjo, tenor banjo, bouzouki, mandolin) and Daniel Murillo (guitar) have also written or arranged some compositions.

Given that a couple of tracks were already reviewed on the EP write-up, I’ll focus on the new songs.

Quitters Nevers Win” and “Coffin Ships” are The Pogues/Flogging Molly infused numbers. The former is a catchy number with a fantastic drums intro. The latter is a song about Irish emigration to Amerikay back in 1848 featuring “The Cooley’s reel”. Excellent fiddle work on this track.

Christy Moore or early Moving Hearts influences can be heard on “The Rising”, a song about the Easter Rising in 1916. The song flows perfectly from the acoustic guitar and uileann pipes beginning to reach its peak after accordion, mandolin, bass and drums have progressively joined. There is a spoken part, a excerpt from W.B. Yeats’ poem “September 1913” and a slow air written by Matt Maulding is also featured on this number. Amazing low whistle, by the way

Brick Top Blaggers are able to make easy something that I find too difficult. On their first album they covered a song that normally I didn’t love, but I enjoyed their rendition. They have done it again. I am not very fond of “Spancil Hill”. I like the lyrics, but not the music. However, BTB have arranged the song in such a way that the final result is perfect. If I have to raise an objection, maybe the “Morrison’s Jig” is an overexposed tuned. Anyway, I have really loved BTB’s cover.

Apart from Irish numbers, “Two Years Enough” showcases other musical directions. “Walk the Plank Again” is a kick-ass pirate number. “Eastern Promises” is the gypsy/Eastern European number featuring piano, accordion (both played by Matt) and fiddle (guest Paul Castellanos). “The Battle of Stirling Bridge” is a tribute to Scottish hero William Wallace. Did I say that Matt plays the Highland pipes on this album? This is one of the songs on which they are played.

Another number featuring the pipes is “Two Years Enough”. More lyrics about the Easter Rising (just have a look to the artwork and you’ll know why) on a song with a Flatfoot 56 twist thanks to the pipes and backing vocals.

Finally, “Love by Attrition” is an excellent song that could be filed together with the Australian seminal band Roaring Jack’s stuff.

Two Years Enough” is a brilliant album that any Celtic punk fan should own. A must have. Hats off to Brick Top Blaggers.
