VIDEO - CREEDS CROSS "The Irish Band"

Creeds Cross are Bart Foley and Denis Dowling Flying the flag for Cork, Dublin and Kildare New album "Gods & Fighting men" is released March 3rd 2014.

Gods & Fighting Men", the new album by Creeds Cross out March 3rd 2014

The album features an all star line up of musicians including Pete Jupp (FM) Drums, Bob Skeat (Wishbone Ash) Bass, Pat McManus (Mamas Boys and Celtus) Fiddle, and Brian Kelly (Shane McGowan) on Banjo.

Paddyrock takes on a new twist with this guitar driven traditionally influenced release. It’s a journey from mayhem to melancholy, stopping at every pub in between!

Written and Produced by Bart Foley, who’s background as a songwriter and a session player has seen him signed to some of the biggest music labels in the business, including Rondor Music and Peer Music International.

Regular trips to the songwriting capital of the US, Nashville, meant that he would learn about song crafting from some of the best writers in the world

Bart Foley was born in Co Cork, but grew up in Dublin and met guitarist, Denis Dowling, a Co Kildare native on the busy London music circuit. The spark for a different Irish rock album was born and "Gods & Fighting Men" is the result.

Drawing on inspiration from memories of growing up in Ireland and the rich and varied tapestry of Irish music, the songs are both autobiographical and fictional at the same time. With influences from the great Irish rock bands like Thin Lizzy and the Horslips and the more traditional Moving Hearts and Stocktons Wing, Creeds Cross have, in making the album "Gods & Fighting Men", created a new niche and genre of music.

REVIEW - TOWER OF DUDES "Make Your Own Culture" (2014)

The Tower of Dudes "Make Your Own Culture" Velvet Rut Records 003/TOD 004
Release date: 1 March 2014
Running time: 33:25, 12 tracks

Make Your Own Culture” is the Tower of Dudes’ third album. The band was established in Prague (Czech Republic) by some US, Canadian and British expatriates and recently moved to Victoria, BC (Canada). The Towers of Dudes are Johnny Feelings (guitar, vocals), Urban Su (vibraphones, mandolin, background vocals), Friendly (drums, background vocals), Dirt MD (bass, background vocals), “Gentleman” Joel Fernandes (electric guitar, background vocals), Tarah Masu (accordion, background vocals) and Nick Jennings (banjo). They define their music as “Eastern European Accordion-Fronted Gypsy Cowpunk with Post Indie Hard Folk Punk Influences”.

Ecclectic? Sure. Upbeat gypsy numbers like the opening track “Make Your Own Culture”; polka on “10.000 Hours”; indie pop-rock on “Let it Go”; “Lower Shelf Taste” makes me think of Mano Negra’s “King Kong Five” 7” B-side, “Food Fight” … And the Tower of Dudes keep on exploring more territories on the best songs:  the catchy song “We Never Learn Anything”, the cowpunk track “Party Like You Use to Could”, The Damned infused “Please Don’t Bury Me Alive” and “Station Wagon”, a song with a Talking Heads twist.

If you love gypsy music, polka and cowpunk, “Make Your Own Culture” is a good choice. These guys don’t try to copy other acts, but to create their own musical world. Enjoy the Tower of Dudes experience.

REVIEW - ROVERS AHEAD "Always the Sinner, Never the Saint" (2014)

Rovers Ahead "Always the Sinner, Never the Saint" Cat. no. MMASR002
Release date: 7 February 2014
Running time: 44:07 13 tracks

What do Flogging Molly, Sir Reg and Rovers Ahead have in common? Yes, all of these bands are fronted by an Irish expat.

Rovers Ahead is an eight piece band hailing from Denmark. The band was established in 2007 and they delivered a couple of 3 track EPs in 2009 (“Candy Farm Sessions”) and 2010 (“Subversive Sessions”). Nevertheless,  their album was not released till the beginning of February 2014. As the bands has stated in the digital booklet  liner notes “This particular record has been through so many trials and tribulations and we are proud to finally be able to release it!”

We have been following the band from our very beginning and are happy to hear how the songs have evolved from their first live songs from Myspace heyday and the two EPs to the final studio cuts. Some musicians have gone and new members have joined the band, but the core of the band has not changed: Nathan Corcoran (vocals), Lasse Lund Elmer (guitar), Benjamin Hansen (banjo, mandolin, guitar), Niels Koch (fiddle) and Kaare Grasboll (accordion). And this is one of the band’s strengths, the songwriting and the musicianship is top-notch because Nathan, Lasse, Benjamin, Niels and  Kaares have been together for a long time.  The wait has been too long, but the effort has paid off.

As far as the lyrics are concerned, even if some of them have been written by Danes, the topics have a strong Irish pedigree: difficult relationships between a father and his son (“My Dear Father”), losers (“King of Nothing”), pub & booze life “One Mad Night at the Pub”, “Went Out to Get a Drink”), “difficult loves” ("Bonnie Lass", "Ghost of Anne Reily") … and an amazing punk/social number about being on the dole nowadays (“Lend Me This Month’s Rent”).

Rovers Ahead have followed an approach that I do really appreciate:  almost all of the tracks are self-penned songs and one of them is an instrumental number, “Stingy Jack’s Rumble”. Besides, the only traditional track is a spoken number, “The Mouse on the Barroom Floor”. In other words, no standard drinking song can be found on their debut album. Hats-off to you, Rovers Ahead!

Musically, the sound of the band tries to go away from the Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys ends. They have an own sound with some Dubliners, Blood or Whiskey and Killigans drops.  “Always the Sinner, Never the Saint” has been mixed and mastered by Göran Frid and Erik Dahlqvist at DFM Studios. Yes, the very same Erik Dahlqvist from Sir Reg. Then you can be aware that the album sound is perfect.

The highlights on the album IMHO would be “One Mad Night at the Pub”, “Stingy Jack’s Rumble”, “Bonnie Lass”, “Lend Me This Month’s Rent”, “My Dear Father”,  “Day of Defeat”, “King of Nothing” and “Make Me a Saint”.

The album packaging is a digipack with no lyrics booklet. However, a link to the PDF booklet  is stated on the credit notes. Once you have bought your CD and downloaded the digital booklet,  you’lll get a further reward ;-)

What are you waiting for? Grab a Carlsberg bottle, a pint of stout or a bottle of whiskey and dance to “Always the Sinner, Never the Saint”

Tracklist:

01 - My Dear Father 4:07
02 - Bonnie Lass 2:54
03 - Ghost of Anne Reily 3:29
04 - King of Nothing 3:08
05 - The Mouse on the Barroom Floor 0:20
06 - One Mad Night at the Pub 2:44
07 - Went Out to Get a Drink (But Ended Up in Jail) 2:35
08 - Rose Full of thorns 3:49
09 - Make Me a Saint 4:17
10 - Stingy Jack's Rumble 2:02
11 - Day of defeat 3:42

BLEEDING HEARTS - WINTER NEWS

(Source: the band's mail-out and the band's website)

1. STUFF

"That was the year that was 2013. So, quicker than downing a pint at closing time, the new year and 2014 is here and upon us. We have some plans by the way - the first of which is recording a new CD demo, which represents the 4 piece sans fiddle line-up and some new tunes. Well mostly new.
Said recording is done and dusted, mixed and mastered with the tunes being "Blackberry Riot", "Their World", and "Partisan".

Then we will get it out there to venues and festivals and stuff. We hope to post something up soon - probably via our facebook page because it means I don't have to do owt. Please go visit and say hello because I am told it's the new way to communicate, this social media thing. Me, I still prefer a pint in a pub and a chat.

Hopefully we will look at doing a low-budget lo-fi video to go with one of the tunes. Probably "Blackberry Riot". Why? Because we and it are fashionably un-cool and behind the times. Even though it is still in the news. If you know what the song is about you will know what I mean.
Some more gigs would be nice, and a helpful hand of acoustic gigs to break us in nicely, so check out the gig page regularly 'cus we have a plan. Did I say that already? Oh hum.

We are well excited about 2014 'cus it adds up to 7 and that is supposed to be lucky innit, and as everyone knows we are a well lucky band mostly, Glad 2B Alive and all that. We’re cooking on eco-gas now and raring to go...

2. PARTISAN - THE NEW ACOUSTIC(ISH) ALBUM

It's on hold for the time being. No cash. Sorry."

3. GIGS

1st March: The Horseshoes, 2 Heath End Road, Nuneaton UK (acoustic)

15th March: The Wheatsheaf, Leighton Buzzard, UK

8th April: Mouth & Music, Boars Head, Kidderminster, UK (an acoustic kind of 'folk all stars' bash)

REVIEW - FEROCIOUS DOG s/t (2013)

Ferocious Dog s/t - Weird Sounds cat no. WSR0002 and self-released limited edition
Release date: 5 April 2013
Running time: 52:44, 15 tracks

British folk punk has always had a strong following in the mainland, particularly in Germany and Austria.  Levellers are the band at the forefront of that scene since they were the first British fiddle folk punk band. Other acts such as Tofu Love Frogs, Tricks Upon Travellers or Bleeding Hearts also became popular in the festival circuit. Ferocious Dog was also there, but fans have had to wait till their latest reincarnation to get their first recordings (some EPs in 2011-2012). Ferocious Dog hail from Nottinghamshire and their current  line-up is Ken Bonsall  (lead singer, guitar), Dan Booth (fiddle), Kyle Peters (guitar), Ellis Waring (mandolin, guitar, banjo), Dave Drury (bass) and Brad Drury (drums). They released their self-titled debut album in 2013. And,  surprise, surprise … the album has been released by a German label, Weird Sounds.

As a fiddle folk punk band, the obvious comparison is the Levellers. You know, a fiddle-led band and songs titled “Freeborn John” or “Criminal Justice”. But, if one listens carefully to the songs, a different approach can be found. I would say that sometimes Ken’s vocals resemble Mark’s way of singing; however, I don’t hear the fiddle and bass sonic wall that  Jon and Jeremy used to build on their early albums. In fact, the fiddling on some tracks is closer to Goats Don’t ShaveOut in the Open” era. Just listen to “On the Rocks” or “Criminal Justice”.

So, Ferocious Dog’s debut album is an interesting British folk punk CD with a Celtic twist. Together with tracks 3 and 8, the outstanding numbers would be “Blind Leading the Blind” (some McDermott’s 2 Hours touch on this), the kick-ass rendition of “Paddy on the Railway”, “Quiet Paddy”, “Too Late” (amazing song with two different parts), “Mairi’s Wedding Part II” (with a reggae part) , and the first songs on the album, “The Glass” (an anti-war song) and “Lee’s Tune”,  both of them featuring banjo.

Their debut album has had two different pressings: the German edition, Weird Sounds cat no. WSR0002, and  the limited edition released by the band. Apart from the different  artwork, the limited edition CD has a track called “Verse for Lee” (the album was recorded in loving memory of Ken’s song, Lee Bonsall, 1987-2012). As it’s not listed on the German edition I don´t know if it has been included as a hidden track or not.

A piece of advice: Buy this CD and then the 3 piece acoustic  album that  Ferocious Dog are releasing soon.

Tracklist:

01 - The Glass 2:37
02 - Lee's Tune 2:25
03 - On The Rocks 2:41
04 - Too Late 3:21
05 - Freeborn John 3:11
06 - Hell Hounds 3:25

REVIEW - McONAK "Piraten Matxinada" (2013)

McOnak "Piraten Matxinada" Mauka musikagintza, Cat. no. Mauka012
Release date: 5 December 2013
Running time: 38:46, 11 tracks

The folk-punk in the Basque country has a long history. Even if there are no full albums blending folk with punk or rock from the mid eighties, some seminal bands wrote several folk-punk numbers (Celtic and Non-Celtic). Probably the first song would be Hertzainak’s self-titled song whose single was given away with the first copies of their second album “Hau dena aldatu nahi nuke” (1985). The next songs would be ” Jaungoikoa eta lege zarra” off “El estado de las cosas” (1986), the second album released by Kortatu and Baldin Bada’s Ibilaldia single “Zirt Zart”. La Polla Records’s song “No somos nada” that opened their third album in 1986 was the first song featuring the Asturian bagpipes.

But the first band blending Celtic and Basque folk music with pop-rock would be Sorotan Bele, whose first and second Capercaillie infused albums from 1993 and 1994 sold a huge amount of copies. Later, bands from both sides of the Spanish-French border released some Celtic rock albums in the Celtas Cortos vein (Rhune and Zapozain). More recently, Bizardunak have become quite popular merging The Pogues and Wolfe Tones influences. And don’t forget Deiedra, with their acoustic rebel music straight from the pub.

McOnak are a young band from Lekitto (Lekeitio), a Basque fishing port in Biscay. Even if these lads share a strong nationalist rebel side with Bizardunak, their music is less aggressive and more diverse.

Piraten Matxinada” (“The pirate rebellion”) is a fresh album that musically looks to Hertzainak and Sorotan Bele.  There is a small Dropkick Murphys twist on “Traizio balada” and some Celtic influences, but the sound is more Basque than Celtic. The instrumentation is based on diatonic accordion, whistle and/or sax and harmonica together with guest musicians on fiddle, keyboards and pedal steel.

The opening cut is called “Zerbezien Komandua” ("The Beer Commando”) a catchy song featuring Ager Isunza on fiddle.  The following number is a slow number about the band, “McOnak”. The third track, “Zure garaiak”, is an upbeat song with an in yer face tin whistle featuring Andoni Basterretxea (Delirium Tremens) on vocals.

The fourth song, "Traizio balada", features another well-known vocalist, Aritz Artola from Bizardunak. Banjo can be heard on this amazing number.

The following cut is “Ireki botila” (“Open the Bottle”). It’s a fantastic Sorotan Bele meets The Men They Couldn’t Hang song featuring Ager Isunza on pedal steel. A great cow-punk number.

Altxa lagun” is a tribute song to Iñigo Cavacas, an Athletic Bilbao fan that died when he was hit “accidentally” by a rubber bullet shot by the police after a football game.

Espekulazioa” is another kick ass song. At the beginning it’s an acoustic number and then it goes electric. Billiant in yer face tin whistle once again.

The following number, “Kateak apurtu” (“Break the chains”) showcases accordion,  fiddle (guest Esther Gabiola) and banjo. An infectious fast-paced song.

Beste egun bat” (“Another Day”) is a Caribbean rythms song featuring keyboards (Olatz Salvador from Skaiketan) and Sax.

Finally, a couple of quieter numbers. “Tabernako argiak” (“The Tavern Lights”) is one of my fave cuts on the album. It’s a top-notch ballad with a Loquillo y Los Trogloditas twist. "Banoa" is a back to basics Bob Dylan infused folk-rock number featuring harmonica.

So, I strongly recommend “Piraten matxinada” by McOnak. The lads from Lekitto have delivered an appealing folk-punk-rock album that both Celtic and non-Celtic audiences will enjoy.

REVIEW - AULD CORN BRIGADE "Rebels till the End" (2013)

Auld Corn Brigade "Rebels till the End" Bad Dog Records BD60
Release date: 28 December 2013
Running time: 49:50, 14 tracks

Auld Corn Brigade have been around for a while, blending the Wolfe Tones and streetpunk. If their debut album “A Fighter’s Lullaby” was full of Rebel songs,  their follow-up, the 4 track EP “Our Flag, proved  that the boys and girls from Nordhausen were able to defend their own material.

Rebels till the End” is obviously their most mature effort to date. The album lists 14 tracks and 10 of them are self-penned songs. The main songwriter is lead vocalist/guitarist/bass player Nico, but fellow member Marko has co-written one song with him, “Old Lullaby”. A small change in the line-up can be noticed. Bassist Klaus is no longer on board but there is a new member playing accordion, piano, tin whistle and fiddle: Eric.

Yes, there is a musical evolution, but the band’s  DNA has not varied. Lyrics are rebel songs; from the XXIst century, but as rebel as ever. The lyrics cover Irish topics (emigration in “Sheila and Shawn”,  fighters for freedom in “Graves of the Fallen Soldiers”), but there are also numbers about worldwide “problems” (“Financial Times”), underlying racism (“Idyllic Small Town”), rugby anthems (“Seamrog Song” and “Come Back Home”), a tribute to Sankt Pauli football club and neighbourhood (“Forza Sankt Pauli”) and even a drinking song (“Old Lullaby”).

My fave numbers, following the track order: “1605” (a song about Guy Fawkes day), ”Sheila and Shawn” (fantastic chorus to sing-along and excellent guitar work), “Seamrog Song” (one of the best songs on the album), “Come Back Home” (featuring “Auld Lang Syne” on tin whistle at the end of the song), “Old Lullaby” (an infectious number. At the beginning Nico sings a capella, then the rest of the band joins. Excellent  banjo picking and clapping at the end), “Ydillic Small Town” (another street punk anthem), “Day to Day” (the single, ACB covering Gary Bolstad), “Forza Sankt Pauli” (a live favourite), “Donny brook Fair” (ACB return to their beloved territory, Irish ballads), “Rose of No Man’s Land” (another cover about the Red Cross nurses in WW I) and their amazing rendition of “South Australia”. Maybe a couple of details could have been improved. Fiddle and tin whistle get the right treatment, but perhaps the accordion is a little bit hidden in the mix. Besides, I feel that in some songs the electric instruments sound stronger than Nicole Vocals.

Auld Corn Brigade have remained faithful to Bad Dog Records and their label has released the CD in a digipack once again. As you can see, the artwork is awesome. I guess that Auld Corn Brigade will sell a lot of t-shirts with the skeleton-fiddler.

Congrats to Auld Corn Brigade for their evolution as a Celtic streetpunk band. If they keep on growing in future releases, they’ll become an essential band.

REVIEW - THE MOORINGS "La Cigale Unplugged" (2013)

The Moorings "La Cigale Unplugged" BIP02013
Release date: 9 November 2013
Running time: 29:06, 8 tracks

It’s difficult to understand why a band that has only released one EP and one album decides to issue an unplugged album. Normally, live albums are delivered after having released several studio records. However, the answer becomes obvious when one takes into account that The Moorings were offered to open for The Dubliners at their 50th anniversary concert at La Cigale in Paris.

La Cigale Unplugged” features everything one can expect from a Celtic (punk)-rock live album: a set of tunes, the band’s greatest hits and some standards. The weakest points, IMHO, are the running time (less than 30 minutes) and the feeling that some songs have been performed at a slower tempo than studio takes. I admit that it’s an unplugged album and The Moorings were opening for a non-electric band, then I guess that it’s the approach that was needed for that evening.

Four out of eight songs were previously recorded on “Pints & Glory” (“Away from Home”, “The Nightingale”, “The Wild Rover” and “Friendship”) an the other half are never previously released numbers (“Nicky’s Kick/The Lads of Clifden/Draughty Petticoats”, “Broken Hearted Man”, “A Posy of Lily” and “The Mariner I Used to Be”). BTW, all of the new tracks are self-penned songs. Regarding the line-up, The Moorings have evolved from a seven piece band to a quintet . Besides, guitarist Nicky has shifted from guitar to banjo, at least for this album. Although there is no permanent whistler on the band, a tin whistle can be heard on one of the songs. I guess that Anne-Sophie  switched from fiddle to tin whistle, since nothing is mentioned on the credits.

The digipack packaging is amazing and the album cover reminds me of Flogging Molly’s debut album.

My picks: the excellent set of tunes “Nicky’s Kick/The Lads of Clifden/Draughty Petticoats”, The Pogues infused song “The Mariner I Used to Be”, their kick ass rendition of “The Wild Rover” and their well-known anthem “Friendship”, which is really played at a fast pace.

For those who love vinyls, the album is available both in CD and vinyl.
